Why commemorate the 140th anniversary?

The average interval between the past five large earthquakes on the Hayward Fault is 140 years. With the 140th anniversary another large Hayward Fault earthquake can occur at any time. The 1868 Hayward Earthquake Alliance was formed to help coordinate and promote efforts and activities between organizations throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area planning to commemorate the earthquake.
